However, if you want to lose weight, swapping unhealthy foods for more nutritious options is one of the best things you can do—and that starts by looking at the food in your own home. In fact, some of the worst foods for your overall health may be in your pantry.

To find out some of the worst pantry snacks you should cut out if you want to avoid belly fat, we spoke with nutritionist Trista Best of Balance One Supplements and Valeria Dolbel, founder of the Beauty Diet. They tell us about two you should think twice about adding to your cart when you’re at the grocery store: Doritos and cookies.

1. Chips like Doritos

When it comes to the worst snacks for your overall health, Best says that chips are definitely at the top of the list—especially if you’re trying to avoid weight gain. “They are often fried, made with inflammatory omega-6 oils, refined carbohydrates, and a combination of fats and carbohydrates that cause oxidative stress in the body,” he explains.

And while there are plenty of fattening chips to avoid, she tells us that “Doritos are one of the worst types of chips to eat, regardless of flavor.” As Best points out, “It’s made with artificial colors and flavors along with refined carbohydrates. These forms of carbohydrates cause a rapid increase in glucose, which increases the rate of body fat storage.” Yikes!

In addition to all those carbs and artificial ingredients, another major drawback of Doritos is the fact that they’re “easy to eat mindlessly because of the variety of flavors.” That makes it difficult to enjoy chips in moderation, which, as we all know, is one of the keys to a healthy diet. “When eating chips, if necessary, it’s best to choose the whole grain option and bake or eat them pre-portioned,” advises Best.

2. Store-bought cookies

If you have a sweet tooth, you can usually choose cookies over chips. Unfortunately (but not surprisingly), store-bought cookies aren’t a better option. Dolbel says that these treats, along with other sweets like pies and cakes, “are the food category that contributes the most calories that count for added sugar intake yet provide little or no nutritional value.” When you load up on all those calories without getting anything substantial from food, you put yourself at risk for weight gain: “Low fiber and very refined grains increase the risk of weight gain and higher levels of belly fat,” explains Dolbel. , adding that your favorite cookies are likely to “cause belly fat because of highly processed ingredients like butter, sugar and refined flour.” Say it isn’t!

Fortunately, you don’t have to completely ignore your sweet tooth just to avoid weight gain. There are many healthy yet sweet options out there. Dolbel recommends using plain Greek yogurt and homemade granola, which can “help with weight loss by controlling portion sizes to ensure you’ll get all the nutrients and keep you full for longer.” Yum!
