AHF will run a full-page, full-color ad targeting the prices and policies of Bay Area drugmaker Gilead Sciences, Inc. The ad, which will run in the San Francisco Chronicle, is simply titled “Greed,” however, with the word ‘greed’ scrawled in three red letters superimposed over the Gilead logo to create the word. The ad includes a photo of the company’s CEO Daniel O’Day under a microscope in the US financial sector. (Photo: Business Wire)

The AHF ad contains a long and growing list of selfish actions by Gilead over the years in its HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C drugs that have increased the company’s bottom line by tens of billions of dollars mostly at the expense of the patients and community providers it cares for and serves. Points noted in the ad:

“Gilead is notorious for charging $1,000 for one pill of the Hep C drug Sovaldi.

Gilead is being sued by thousands of HIV patients for knowingly selling an inferior drug until its patent expires.outside.

Gilead replaces the inferior drug Biktarvy and has now reduced its patient benefit plan.

The price of Gilead’s anti-HIV drug Descovy has doubled in the past two years.

Gilead’s selfishness knows no bounds which makes them the pawns of the drug companies.”

The Sunday Chronicle ad comes after a successful grassroots campaign that ends today (10/28). The campaign and protests, which received media coverage from KPIX, KGO and 340B Report, included a weeklong series of twice-daily protests held by attorneys at Gilead’s headquarters in Foster City, CA, where the groups strongly criticized the company’s pricing and policies.

55 lawyers and activists affiliated with AHF began protesting each day at 8:30 am in front of Gilead headquarters (333 Lakeside Dr., Foster City, CA 94404). Lawyers reconvene and resume each day at 12:00 noon PT. A huge costume theater protest ($1 million in cash, pig heads and snot, promoters dressed as burglars with wallets slung over their shoulders) took place on Wednesday.

The 340B drug pricing program is administered by the US Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA). It has helped provide lower-cost medicines and better health outcomes to millions of Americans and the nonprofit clinics and hospitals that serve them. Safety net providers like Ryan White’s providers who serve HIV patients have the right under the 340B rule to buy drugs for their patients at a reduced price. In March, Gilead put profits before patients by imposing illegal conditions on when and how it would issue discounts on certain Hepatitis C drugs.
