Doctor warns ‘woke’ agenda gaining foothold in medical colleges: ‘Diversity above merit’

A recent study by the Association of American Medical Colleges shows that diversity, equity and inclusion policies have gained a significant foothold at American medical colleges, and a medical expert tells Fox News Digital that they pose a serious risk to quality of care and freedom of expression.

“Medical schools are devoting more and more time to these social and political issues, leaving less and less time for medical studies,” Dr. Stanley Goldfarb, chair of the Do No Harm board, told Fox News Digital in response to published analysis by the AAMC, which essentially serves as a report on how its medical schools are doing in implementing a DEI policy that critics have described as a “woke” agenda.

The AAMC report states that “assessing institutional and school-level policies, practices, and programs is the first step toward ensuring that academic medicine is well positioned to foster a diverse and culturally prepared workforce, advance inclusion excellence, promote equity advancement, and enhance engagement.” with local communities”.

The report, which surveyed 101 medical schools, found that 43% of schools “have promotion and tenure policies that specifically reward faculty scholarship and service on DEI topics” and that the number is in red, suggesting the figure is inadequate. The report also shows that 100% of schools “have enrollment policies and practices to encourage diverse student backgrounds.”


Goldfarb, a board-certified kidney specialist who previously served as associate dean for curriculum at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, told Fox News Digital that these DEI policies put less emphasis on merit and more on diversity standards, which ultimately means the quality of care suffers.

“Patients will be viewed as members of a group based on skin color, not as individuals,” Goldfarb said. “Diversity is elevated above merit and achievement as the basis for selecting medical students and promoting faculty.” It must lead to a decline in the quality of the physician workforce and undermines America’s fundamental idea that you can achieve your goals with hard work and talent.”

In addition, the report shows that political advocacy was ingrained in the DEI process at medical schools, as evidenced by statistics showing that 75% of medical schools say they “advocate for policies and/or legislation at the local, state, or federal level related to on its mission of diversity, inclusion and equality.”

Goldfarb explained to Fox News Digital that political advocacy has become a “major focus” of DEI’s efforts at medical schools.

“The get-out-the-vote efforts of every university and medical school are thinly veiled efforts to support Democratic candidates, because it’s well known that undergraduate and graduate students tend to vote Democratic,” Goldfarb said.

“All medical schools depend to some extent on state or federal funding, so all of these institutions support powerful lobbying efforts. They are well motivated to support local political powers and in most large cities, where medical schools are mostly located, this means supporting democratic administrations.”

The AAMC defended its report and DEI policy in a statement to Fox News Digital, saying its medical schools have an “obligation to address the factors that drive racism and bias in health care” as well as “to prepare physicians who are culturally responsive.”

Acosta said the AAMC also has a commitment to “support institutions to be diverse, equitable and inclusive overall to support these goals,” and explained that the report is a tool his group uses to help medical schools “identify areas for improvement to create a holistic strategy where DEI is integrated into all operations and missions.”
