Steph Curry is the subject of a cover story in the new issue of Rolling Stone. He was the second Golden State Warriors player to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone, following in Kevin Durant’s footsteps in 2016. Curry is also only the fifth NBA player to have his own cover in the magazine’s history.
There just weren’t many basketball players on the cover of Rolling Stone. Before Kareem Abdul-Jabbar showed up with Cheech and Chong in 1978, there wasn’t a single NBA player gracing the cover.
We had to wait 15 years for another NBA player to appear on the cover when Shaquille O’Neal did it in November 1993. Dennis Rodman did the cover a few years later, in December 1996. Michael Jordan was part of a montage of over a hundred people on a 2006 issue of the cover.
Steph Curry is interested in working with Durant again
Curry gave a wide-ranging interview about his philanthropy and activism, his mental health, and of course, Kevin Durant. The baby-faced assassin confirmed the Warriors were discussing adding Durant after he asked the Nets for a trade this summer.
“I never hesitated. The idea of playing with KD and knowing who he is as a person from our history over these three years, I think KD is a really good guy. I think he is misunderstood.
I think certain things have happened to him in his life that have affected his ability to trust those around him, in the sense that he feels safe at all times. I understand all these things after playing with him and getting to know him. I love this guy”
While he believes the Warriors can win another NBA title, Curry admits he would wholeheartedly welcome Durant returning to the Golden State.
“If someone says you wouldn’t have that conversation – no disrespect to anyone on our team – but you don’t know how things work.”
Unfortunately, the Nets were never really interested in trading Kevin Durant. KD originally requested a trade from the franchise on June 30th. He began making cryptic comments on social media, then reportedly pressured the franchise to fire head coach Steve Nash and GM Sean Marks. None of this persuaded Brooklyn to part ways with her controversial superstar.
There is a lot to learn from Steph’s comments. First, the Warriors are very confident in their team culture. They don’t seem to be concerned about players getting annoyed by being attached to trade rumours. The organization is confident that everyone will maintain their professionalism.
Likewise, they appear unconcerned about adding three players – Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole – to the final season of their 2022-23 contracts. All three could end up in the free-agent market in the next offseason.
Steph also commented on Donald Trump, who famously kicked the Warriors out of the White House after winning the NBA title. Curry said Trump’s rhetoric:
“Has a tone of division that has no place in our country.”
