Life-saving lessons with emergency workers, workshops to combat social anxiety and insightful yoga classes are part of Council’s first Confident Kids program, which begins next week.
State Emergency Service Commander Swansea Commander said the unit will host four fun and engaging workshops at Pelican Foreshore on Tuesday 27 September and Thursday 6 October.
“Flood prevention lessons have the potential to save lives,” Mr. Hoppe said.
“We will provide insights into how flood waters work and how to stay safe.”
“Children will have the opportunity to challenge their physical and emotional strength as they climb, jump and hop through the obstacle course.”
From 27 September 2022 to 30 June 2023, Confident Kids, funded by the NSW Government’s Children and Young People Wellbeing Recovery Initiative, will host 20 pop-up play sessions as well as 15 workshops focused on building focus on resilience.
Erin Pascall, Lake Macquarie City Council’s Children and Families Community Planner, said the goal of the program is to help children and youth recover, build resilience, strengthen community networks and improve mental health and well-being. “
We are excited to support children and families to build trust and connections within their community,” said Ms. Pascall.
“A free yoga session on Friday, September 30th, using movement, yoga postures, mindfulness and breathing techniques will leave participants revitalized and refreshed.”
A workshop will be held on Tuesday 20 October to help children be brave and combat social anxiety.
In addition, three game-time sessions will be held beginning Friday, November 4th, which will put families in touch with local support services and related health professionals.
“We want to make families aware of valuable services that may be flying under the radar,” Ms Pascall said.
“These services will provide parenting programs, assist families in raising children in a safe and loving environment, and more.”
Regional Youth Minister Ben Franklin said he was delighted that the Confident Children program was receiving financial support.
“The $10.3 million Restoring Wellbeing of Children and Youth initiative aims to help implement projects that support recovery, build resilience and support the mental health and wellbeing of young people across the region.” said Franklin.
“The Confident Kids program will deliver important outcomes for families and young people in the Lake Macquarie area.”
Although all events are free, bookings are essential.
