Lawyers representing Greg Fertuck ask to withdraw from case following complaints filed by accused


Greg Fertuck, accused of the 2015 murder of his estranged wife, must seek independent counsel as both attorneys representing him ask that he withdraw from his case.

According to the order, Judge R. Danyliuk said Fertuck filed a complaint about attorneys Morris Bodnar and Mike Nolin with the Saskatchewan Bar Association in May and June.

According to the document, both defense attorneys continued to represent Fertuck months later, unaware of the reported grievances.

“I didn’t see the complaints. Neither will the defense attorneys until the end of August,” the judge said in the injunction.

“It’s fair to say that the defenders were caught off guard by this development.”

The judge did not go into the details of the complaints, but described the information provided to the judge regarding the defendant’s allegations as “grave”.

“Defense Counsel alleges that the allegations are very serious, so much so that the fundamental trust that underpins the attorney-client relationship has been irrevocably damaged, leaving neither attorney to represent Mr. Fertuck,” the statement said.

Rifle presented in evidence at Greg Fertuck’s trial

Fertuck is on trial for first-degree murder in the 2015 murder of his wife, Sheree Fertuck.

Sheree was last seen in December 2015 leaving her family’s farm to haul gravel in the Kenaston, Sask. area about 53 miles south of Saskatoon.

Her body was never recovered.

Greg was arrested in June 2019 after a nearly year-long undercover operation known as Mr. Big Stitch.

The document said Fertuck has asked to represent himself at upcoming trial dates but is open to appointing another attorney for him.

Bodnar and Nolin must now submit a formal resignation letter for a hearing scheduled for October 24.
