Move to rename NTR University of Health Sciences unconstitutional: Naidu writes to Guv

Amaravati: One day after the Andhra Pradesh Assembly passed a law renaming the Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, in YSR University of Health Sciences, leaders of the opposition Telugu Desam Party claimed the move was “unconstitutional”. TDP Chief Nara Chandrababu Naidu submitted a letter to Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan, urging him to intervene and approve the unconstitutional and misanthropic proposal to change the name of Dr. Stop NTR University of Health Sciences.

In the letter, Mr. Naidu mentioned the YSRCP-led state government’s anti-grassroots policies aimed at reversing the development and welfare activities initiated by the previous governments. “The final straw is the YSRCP-led government’s proposal to name the Dr. Changing NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada is not only regressive but also vindictive,” Mr. Naidu wrote.

dr Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) conceived the idea of a health university in the then undivided state of Andhra Pradesh and founded the Andhra Pradesh University of Health Sciences in Vijayawada in 1986, the first of its kind in the country. The university itself was founded after taking over the Siddhartha Medical College, a private college, to unite all medical colleges under one roof. Until then, medical colleges throughout Andhra Pradesh were affiliated with various universities. Later, in 1998, the university was re-established in memory of the late Dr. NTR and in commemoration of his services to the field of medicine in general and the University of Health Sciences in particular by the then Government of Andhra in Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences renamed Pradesh.

“The paranoid and schizophrenic mindset of the YSRCP-led government is illustrated by the fact that the university’s name change occurred in the year as Telugus nationwide celebrated NTR’s 100th anniversary,” Mr. Naidu said in the letter.

He said the university’s name-changing bill was passed in the AP Legislative Assembly when the opposition was not in the House of Representatives. Interestingly, Cabinet approval was obtained in dark hours, indicating the law’s unconstitutional and anti-popular nature, he claimed.
