The National Cadet Corps (NCC) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday to address plastic pollution and achieve the universal goal of clean waters by “ Puneet Sagar Abhiyan‘ and ‘Tide Turner’s Plastic Challenge Program’.
The MoU was signed between NCC Director General Lt Gen Gurbirpal Singh and UN World Food Program Representative Bihow Parajuli in the presence of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.
“The goal of the MOU between the NCC and UNEP is to focus and pool efforts to engage youth in promoting clean water,” the Department of Defense said in a statement. The aim is to promote capacity building and awareness of environmental sustainability through information sharing and training initiatives; Foster opportunities for NCC cadets to participate in appropriate national and international platforms related to environment and climate change, and to participate in and develop joint initiatives of shared intentions related to environment and climate change, it said.
The MoU, which is to remain in force for a period of three years, aims to consolidate, develop and detail their cooperation and effectiveness in achieving common environmental goals, the statement said.
On December 1, 2021, the NCC had “ Puneet Sagar Abhiyan‘, a nationwide campaign, initially for a month, to clean up plastic and other debris from seashores while raising awareness of the importance of cleanliness. It was then expanded across India as a year-round campaign to include rivers and other bodies of water.
Since the start of ‘ Puneet Sagar Abhiyan‘ Over 100 tons of plastic waste has been collected at nearly 1,900 locations by more than 12 lakh NCC cadets, alumni and volunteers, affecting 1.5 million people, the ministry said. “Of the approximately 100 tons of plastic waste collected, more than 60 tons were sent for recycling,” she added.
