Several of our nutritionists have advanced practice certifications in specialty nutrition. These specialty providers have at least 2000 hours of field experience and a successfully completed board exam. They work diligently to ensure that our departments’ nutritional practices continue to be innovative and evidence-based. These advanced certifications include:

Specialist in oncological nutrition (CSO): Nutrition is essential to ensuring veterans with cancer stay strong and healthy. An oncology nutrition specialist can help you develop accessible strategies to maintain excellent nutrition throughout your cancer treatment.

Board Certified Specialist in Diabetes Care and Education (CDCES): The Orlando VAMC serves approximately 40,000 veterans with diabetes. We developed and implemented the Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support Program, recognized for outstanding success by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for 20 years!

Board Certified Specialist in Nutrition Support (CNSC): Enteral and parenteral nutrition (EN and PN) are used to support those who may have difficulty meeting their nutritional needs through the mouth. These specialists help train our nurses, physicians and nutritionists in enteral/parenteral nutrition to optimize our veterans’ nutrition during times when they may not be able to eat orally.

A Board-Certified Specialist in Kidney Nutrition (CSR): If you have AKI, any stage of chronic kidney disease, are on dialysis, or have a kidney transplant, a VA kidney nutritionist can help. A kidney/nephrology nutrition specialist and can teach you how to choose foods that take the strain off your kidneys to help you live a longer, healthier life.

Specialist in gerontological nutrition (CSG): Diet plays an important role in the aging process. A geriatric nutrition specialist can help you choose foods that support strong bones, improve digestion, increase energy, and improve quality of life.
