Online websites to get certification courses as ASUU strike lingers


On February 14, 2022, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) went on an indefinite strike that resulted in the closure of federal universities and some state universities across Nigeria.

Today is 220 days since the strike began.

Rather than stand by, Vanguard is here to provide students affected by the strike with a list of online websites where they can get certification courses.

  1. cousera

Coursera is one of the most popular global online learning platforms that offers a wide variety of free online courses, degrees, short certificate programs, and even online masters degrees from world-class universities and companies. Certificates are also awarded at the end of the training.

The e-learning platform offers thousands of free courses and professional certificates.

Topics range from computer science to psychology and courses are taught by top-notch universities and companies. In 2021, it was estimated that around 150 universities were offering more than 4,000 courses through Coursera.

Many Coursera courses are free to review, but students don’t get access to things like graded homework or certificates of completion when reviewing a course.

Courses that are part of longer programs or specializations typically have a seven-day free trial.

Coursera courses last approximately four to 12 weeks, with one to two hours of video lectures per week. These courses offer quizzes, weekly exercises, graded and verified assignments.

According to Google, their courses are equivalent to a 4-year degree. They also offered 10,000 scholarships. Google and its 20+ partners accept these certificates as the equivalent of a four-year degree.

Udemy is a global destination for online teaching and learning.

The platform has more than 54 million students, 204,000 courses and 71,000 faculty teaching courses in over 75 languages.

Students attend courses primarily to improve job-related skills. Some courses do qualify for technical certification, and Udemy has made a special effort to attract corporate trainers who want to create coursework for employees at their company.

edX is a massive open online course that offers university-level online courses in a variety of disciplines to a worldwide student body, including some free courses. It also conducts research on learning based on how people use its platform.

Course certificates are available for a fee that varies by course. Program certificates are available upon successful completion of a series of courses that make up a program.

edX offers MOOCs and interactive online courses in subjects such as law, history, science, engineering, economics, social sciences, computer science, public health, and artificial intelligence (AI).

edX courses consist of weekly learning sequences. Each learning sequence consists of short videos interspersed with interactive learning exercises that allow students to immediately practice the concepts from the videos.

Courses often include instructional videos that resemble small discussion groups on campus, an online textbook, and an online discussion forum where students can post and review questions and comments with each other and teaching assistants.

LinkedIn Learning is an online learning provider that offers video courses taught by industry experts in software, creativity, and business skills. It allows you to post the completed courses on your LinkedIn profile and receive recommendations based on the skills you are interested in.
