Remembering the time Daigo Umehara got a taste of his own medicine in an EVO top 8

Ume-medicine… Ume-medicine…?

BST|Daigo “The Beast” Umehara is known for being the best Street Fighter player ever, and for a number of reasons. Having predicted and executed EVO Moment 37, positioning yourself so consistently on the world stage in almost every major Street Fighter game, and winning back-to-back EVOs in Street Fighter 4 is a good start, but having a divine maneuver like “Ume-Shoriu” named after you really it speaks to your ability as a competitor.

Daigo is known for being able to get into the heads of his opponents and predict, in incredible detail, exactly what they will do next. However, during the top 8 of EVO 2011, Daigo received a massive amount of his own medicine and looked like a helpless rag doll. Papa Lobster reminisces about this ridiculously high octane in his recent video.

Although it’s been a while since we’ve seen him on the big Street Fighter stage, South Korean competitor Lee “Poongko” Chung Gon was red hot (with both momentum and fury) in the early 2010s.

Poongko was completely intact in his execution but absolutely chaotic in his approach. This perfect mix of order and chaos led to incredible games where he took huge risks and somehow consistently saw them pay off… even against such a high caliber and strong player like the mighty Daigo Umehara.

As strong as Poongko has proven to be at this point, a bettor would still likely put a hefty sum on Daigo, who used by far the best character in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition: Yun.

Not only this, but Poongko used the character with the least health in the game: Seth, and everyone knew that the result would come down to Daigo’s ability to enter his enemy’s mind… his specialty.

The crowd blinked, however, and the set was over as Poongko picked apart Daigo at nearly every turn of the fight. As much as we can talk about this crazy set, Papa Lobster does a wonderful job of setting everything up and communicating the awe of the moment, so check out his full set video below and share your thoughts in the comments afterwards.
