Revolutionizing technology within the behavior health care field

Mental Health Technologies (MHT) brings much-needed technological innovation to an area where we need it most.

With our online, HIPAA-compliant assessment tool, medical practices can submit, evaluate, and credit DSM-IV and DSM-V assessments remotely or in person. Physicians use that information to determine the type of treatment and overall level of care that best suits their patients’ needs and continue to monitor that care through patient progress and physician performance statistics.

MHT founder and CEO Ernie Wallerstein says MHT’s platform mission is to improve patients’ lives through a medically supervised journey to health.

“According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in five adults in the United States has a mental illness in any given year,” said Mr. Wallerstein. “Clearly, there is a need for technological innovation, both from a customer perspective, and from a clinical and analytical perspective.”

“Mental health applications, which focus on conditions and problems such as depression, suicide, and addiction, enable people to receive professional support outside of the therapist’s normal working hours,” he added.

How does MHT work?

The MHT ecosystem can be summarized in five steps:

  1. Tests sent to the patient
    a. Sent one to two days before the appointment
  2. Test results are captured
    a. Uploaded to EMR physician and MHT platform
  3. Treatment plans and automatic referrals
    a. If the patient has a high test score, they will be asked for permission to be contacted directly by the specialist
  4. Send to insurance for payment
  5. Follow up

MHT screenings can be sent to the patient electronically, via email or text message, or completed in the doctor’s office prior to their appointment. Our platform also sends reminders to patients before their appointment if any of the tests they have been given have not been completely completed.

The MHT tool can assess a variety of mental health conditions, including but not limited to:

  • drug abuse
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • PTSD
  • suicidal ideation

Suppose a patient answers any questions in our examination that would trigger an alarm about his safety. In that case, the alert will be immediately sent to the appropriate services as determined by the health care provider.

When test results are received, the results are automatically uploaded to the physician’s EMR system. Doctors then read the test data and match it with appropriate treatment, including automatic referrals.

The main difference between MHT and other technology-enabled mental health companies: Insurance can be billed on behalf of the physician, ensuring seamless payment and a profitable revenue stream for the medical office.

The subsequent examination by referring medical professionals will provide the first doctor with the results of the examination, allowing complete information about the health of the patients throughout their health care team.

Meet our founder and CEO

Ernie Wallerstein Jr. is the founder and CEO of Mental Health Technologies.

As a dedicated and lifelong practitioner of cloud computing and software systems, Ernie understands the untapped potential that can benefit the healthcare field.

“When it comes to mental health care, we saw a huge gap in the services provided to assess patients and collect objective data,” he said. “With effective technology, health care professionals will be able to provide mental health care services to patients across the country.”

The biggest pain point for healthcare providers trying to deal with the growing mental health and substance abuse problem? Good performance.

“The need for mental health and drug abuse screening is huge, but there aren’t enough people to deal with it,” commented Mr. Wallerstein. MHT fills a critical void, with capabilities to support multiple providers and nurses.

“We aim to provide effective tools not only for the mental health industry to treat patients but also for healthcare professionals who are not mental health professionals to assess patients. This helps health care professionals understand if the patient needs further evaluation, should be referred to a mental health/substance abuse specialist, or if they need to consider mental health issues along with the main symptoms.”

To add perspective to our environment, consider this situation. When someone has back surgery and is put into a physical therapy program, the recovery time for a depressed patient is longer than someone without. But imagine if that person had not been diagnosed—and not treated—for a mental health problem. It is important to understand if the patient is already suffering from another underlying condition while the doctor is treating the underlying problems.

“The problem is very big, but the current situation is not enough to fix it. Even as the economy recovers from COVID-19, mental health remains one of the biggest health care issues in the United States. “There are too many patients who need help but cannot access it,” said Mr. Wallerstein.

“That is one of the reasons why we established MHT in 2018 to equip health service providers with effective tools to combat mental health problems.”

Looking ahead: What does the future hold?

MHT has several technology patents pending, filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). These patents focus on efficiency in the delivery of tests and data analysis to provide more information on the effectiveness of treatment based on existing mental health problems.

“We have many new initiatives planned for our platform, with a focus on ADD/ADHD screening, telemedicine, and advanced AI integration,” said the founder and CEO of MHT. “For ADD/ADHD screening, forms are usually sent to parents and teachers. This makes for an inefficient and manual process. We have made this entire process electronic; patients, their caregivers, and their teachers can fill out ADD and ADHD screenings electronically, and the information will be available to the healthcare provider immediately.”

Mental Health Technologies also plans to collaborate with tele-video companies specializing in telepsychology to improve the quality of care provided remotely. In the medium to long term, one of our goals is to increase our predictive analytics capabilities.

“Integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning engines into our environment to take our data and cross-reference it with patient healthcare information,” said Mr. Wallerstein.

Why combine AI and ML? This will open a huge new door in the area of mental health care, allowing providers to measure and access other assumptions related to a patient’s mental state, substance abuse problems, and comorbidities.
