UMass Chan Medical School named one of Boston Globe’s Top Places to Work

As the year draws to a close, the Office of Communications recaps some of the biggest and most-read stories published in 2022, with topics such as UMass Chan’s research led by the FDA on recommendations for rapid tests for COVID-19, plans for regional medical campus with Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington and The Boston Globe’s list of Best Places to Work, which included UMass Chan for the first time. More than 50 percent of UMass Chan’s full-time employees participated in the survey, and they often used the words inclusive and collaborative to describe their experience here.

UMass Chan School of Medicine is named for The Boston Globe’s 2022 Best Places to Work in Massachusetts List UMass Chan is the only institution of higher education in the Commonwealth to be included on the 2022 list, which includes just 150 organizations of all sizes and industries. The entire list of the best places to work in the state is now published online and will be in a special edition The Boston Sunday Globe Magazine this week.

This distinction is based on the results of a confidential employee engagement survey in which 55 percent of UMass Chan’s full-time employees participated last June. The words that came up most in the survey to describe the UMass Chan experience were inclusive and collaborative. Employees also frequently used the words welcoming, supportive, and respectful to describe the company’s culture.

“The aggregated survey results provide us with feedback on the collaborative, connected and inclusive community of our School of Medicine; strong performance in research, education and public service; and in identifying areas of opportunity and potential improvement,” said Chancellor Michael F. Collins in a memo to employees. “The leadership team recognizes that our employees are by far our most important asset and the key to achieving our ambitious strategic plans.”

According to Linda Henry, CEO of Boston Globe Media Partners, the companies on the list are “truly innovative and exciting places to work.”

The Boston Globe consulted with Energage to conduct the survey. Energage teamed up with more than 50 media partners across the United States this year to survey more than 2 million employees at more than 6,000 organizations.

UMass Chan is a public medical institution of the Commonwealth. Part of the UMass system, it is home to a more than $300 million research enterprise, three schools and two business departments. MassBiologics of UMass Chan Medical School is the only nonprofit FDA-licensed manufacturer of vaccines and biologics in the United States. Commonwealth Medicine is the consulting and operations division of UMass Chan’s public services. TH Chan School of Medicine at UMass Chan School of Medicine is ranked 10th in primary care education by US News & World Report in its 2023 ranking of America’s best graduate schools, UMass Chan is ranked 47th in the survey and Tan Chingfen College of Nursing is ranked 44th in the best nursing schools for doctoral practice programs.
