What Taison Chatman’s commitment means to Ohio State basketball: Buckeyes Recruiting

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State basketball program kicked off the fall with virtually a full recruiting class in hopes of putting the finishing touches on a potential top-five class.

The football program put together perhaps the most anticipated season opener in years and Chris Holtmann felt it fitting to use that to his advantage as well. He brought in every member of the class and even added a few other goals to the mix. One was Bronny James, son of NBA All-Star LeBron James, although the odds of him becoming a buckeye may be slim.

The other was Taison Chatman, who used this visit to put the finishing touches on a signing that comes three weeks later.

Chatman’s addition mitigates the loss of George Washington III, who was also in town for that game. The combo guard was the first member of the class but was unsure this weekend if OSU wasn’t in his future. The addition of Chatman to the mix replaces what was clearly necessary in this class while also completing another impressive cycle.

Ohio State has had six recruiting classes since Holtmann was hired, but the last two have raised the program’s recruiting standard. The 2022 class featured four players in the top 65 as a group that ended up scoring 66.44 points as the nation’s No. 8 class and runners-up in the Big Ten. It was the first top 10 finish for OSU since the 2010 and 2011 classes. Now the 2023 class is poised to repeat that success with three appearances by top 50 players and the group currently ranks at 65, 26 points for fifth place – second place in the Big Ten again.

Only one of the other four classes finished in the top 25.

The Buckeyes have raised the standard along the recruiting path, and it’s paying off. The next step is to turn that successful off-season talent acquisition into an on-court success during the season.
