Zac Efron Shares Why He Ditched A Vegan Diet

In an industry known for its transformations, Zac Efron has emerged as a leading Hollywood man who exists in a perpetually jacked body. He may have burst onto the big screen high school musicalbut in the years since, Efron has proven to be a true action star, with the kind of fitness physique that has hailed him as an up-and-coming figure for gym-goers and fitness fans alike.

While Efron has always had a passion for fitness and health, maybe it was Baywatch this cemented his discipline when it comes to nutrition and training for all to see. But as he recently admitted, the pressure to gear up for such a role left him mentally and physically drained. Now he also talks about the vegan diet, which he had to give up.

Speak with Men’s Health USA For the cover story of their October issue, Efron shared that while he initially loved the benefits of a vegan diet, his body was beginning to recognize its limitations. “I started intermittent fasting shortly after I stopped being vegan. My body wasn’t processing the vegetables properly. So I decided to top and try something new. Intermittent fasting really helped with that,” Efron explained.

Since giving up the vegan lifestyle, Efron now eats two meals a day and they both see it Baywatch star consume their fair share of meat. Efron’s daily routine begins with a cardio workout in the morning to get the blood flowing. He then eats his first meal around 11am, at which time he consumes bone broth soup and vegetables along with clean proteins like elk and chicken. Later that night, he packs the carbs with another meal consisting of meat and “a healthy carb like sweet potatoes or quinoa.”

As Efron put it, his body may have suffered somewhat on a vegan diet, but he also found he was missing out on one of his favorite delicacies — offal. “It’s kind of weird, but I really like offal. I love liver and onions,” he said.

The debate about dieting has long continued in the health and wellness industry, and while it’s certainly recognized that a plant-based diet has a significant environmental benefit, the fact remains that it requires an organization to ensure that your body this does not do missing or lacking nutrients or proteins from other sources.

One can imagine that Efron’s grueling workout routines and arduous transformations required for certain Hollywood roles meant his body would have endured quite a tumultuous challenge. When training for Baywatch, Efron ate nothing but lean fish, meat and sweet potatoes, while for other roles he has admitted to not eating. Luckily its latest Apple TV+ series The biggest beer run of all time saw him try the culinary delights of the country.

Though Efron admits his body feels better since going vegan, he acknowledges the importance of a plant-based lifestyle, saying, “Obviously, morally, I still wish I were vegan.”

After filming Baywatch, Efron is committed to an all-organic, whole-food diet high in protein, whole grains, healthy fats, and high-fiber fruits like apples, pears, berries, and all kinds of vegetables. He’d been on a strict diet for the film, going so far as to say he stayed away from carbs, but after production wrapped, he reintroduced them into his diet.

As he explained Fitness for men, “After a while, your body stops craving junk food and you look forward to those meals. There’s that trigger that occurs after two or three weeks of dieting and eating healthy, where your body switches its primary energy source from burning mostly carbohydrates to burning fat. And when it switches, all your cravings change.”

Known as a lover of all types of sports and outdoor activities, Efron stays active with a disciplined exercise regimen. He even created his own YouTube channel, Gym Time, where he worked out alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

To the Baywatch, he trained every day with a focus on back and biceps one day, legs another, shoulders, chest and arms the next, and abs every day. The workouts also focused on supersettings, which required no rest between each exercise to ensure the body burned more calories.
